New Chair, Lana Salvino, presided over the meeting. David's funeral was briefly discussed. It was described as just like him, "Fun!"
Goldmark & Montana Governor Schweitzer
The program was presented first. Peter Goldmark, candidate for Washington Commissioner of Public Lands, was the guest speaker. Goldmark is an Okanogan rancher who has had a lifelong involvement with agriculture, science, education, and public service. He has served the public in many capacities including: Director of Agriculture for the State of Washington, Chairman of the Governor's Council on Agriculture and the Environment, Governor's Council for a Sustainable Washington, founding board member and past Chairman of the Board of Farming and the Environment, volunteer firefighter, and much more.
Peter is a down-to-earth Washingtonian who spoke about the importance of this position, directing what is probably better known as the Department of Natural Resources. The DNR is responsible for protecting and managing 5.6 million acres of our state-owned land. Much of this land is state trust land that provides revenue to help pay for construction of public schools, universities, and other state institutions, and funds services in many counties. These lands are managed to provide fish and wildlife habitat, clean water, and public access. The DNR helps protect public resources by regulating forest practices and preventing and suppressing wildfires. It is responsible for the wise use of millions of dollars. As Goldmark said, "This is a job that I've really been preparing for all my life."
Peter Goldmark has the endorsements of Governor Christine Gregoire, Senator Patty Murray, Speaker Frank Chopp, Congressman Jay Inslee, among many others. Please see his website to learn more. Consider making a contribution toward his tough fight against the incumbent for this very important Washington state position.
Delegates, don't forget the Douglas County Convention this Saturday, April 19 at 10:00 a.m. at Clovis Point Intermediate School (1855 SE 4th St. in E. Wenatchee). We will be accepting/working on resolutions to submit to the State convention in June. You are encouraged to bring a light lunch and beverage. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Humphrey, State Committeewoman or Lana Salvino, Chair.
Shelly Nelson reported that she and her husband Kevin hosted their first precinct party and they have a team of seven. Way to go Precinct 112! They are ready to ID neighborhood voters and start spreading the word about George Fearing, candidate for Congress in the 4th CD and Governor Gregoire's re-election. Bruce Keleman reported that Karen and he will soon be hosting their Precinct 108 party. Jan Davis-Morgan and Bob Butler have partied and built a team of five in Precinct 317! Sandy Weaver will soon be hosting the Precinct 101 party, as will Carole Eidsvvog, Arianna Cozart, and Katy Sessions in Precinct 104; Carol Oliver and Luther Beaty in Precinct 302. Terry Coon will be hosting our second gathering in Precinct 102. We are ready to begin the Party work to ID voters and campaign to "elect Democrats"! Thanks to everyone for your commitment and enthusiasm. Please be sure to let Donna know what's happening in your precinct.

I hope you all had as much fun at your caucuses as I did! It was exciting to see so many people turn-out for this momentous election. A learning experience for most of us, we gathered together in neighborhood precincts to vote, listen to speeches, and sometimes change our minds.
Unfortunately, the numbers were initially transposed on the state website. We were the only county showing a win for Hillary! The initial report of 26 precincts (Rock Island, Sterling, and Clovis) was actually: Obama - 53 delegates and Clinton - 32 delegates. When all was said and done, including the rural caucuses, Obama received 65 delegates and Clinton 37 delegates. Douglas County joined the rest of the state in its preference for Obama.
Not only did we cast our votes, but we also enlarged our grassroots! New volunteers accepted the State Party Challenge to help "elect Democrats". We raised over $1000 in donations. Just as importantly, it seemed like neighbors -- though sometimes disagreeing -- were enjoying spending an afternoon together. Great job, Douglas County Democrats!
A big thanks to all our PCOs/PCCs, information specialists, greeters, ACCs, etc. If you happen to meet the principals and custodial staffs at Rock Island School, Clovis Intermediate, Sterling Intermediate, or any of our rural locations, please express your appreciation for use of their facilities.
Reminder: The next meeting of Douglas County Democrats is Valentines Day: Thursday, Feb. 14 at 7:00 at the Douglas County Fire Station (377 Eastmont).
Respectfully,
Donna Wendt

November 2007 employment figures and unemployment rates for Washington State and its counties were released on December 18, 2007. In the attached four-page PDF report I used this data to analyze the current economic status of Chelan and Douglas counties (also called the Wenatchee Metropolitan Statistical Area or MSA). If you would like the Word version of this write-up please let me know. Thank you. . .

We signed a lease for a campaign office thru next November. It's a great space in the Wenatchee Saving and Loan Building, 5 S. Wenatchee Ave. Douglas County Democrats are sharing in the costs. Pat Notter will be leading the initial move in and set up this Saturday, the 15th, 1PM to 3PM. We can use your help. Please contact Pat Notter at 663-7659 to coordinate. We can use some of the following: office chairs, book cases, computers, wireless router, printer, telephone(s), folding chairs or the green plastic lawn chairs, work tables, and other items you can contribute that might be useful. Please coordinate all donations with Pat so we don't get duplication.
Instead of our usual 3rd Thursday meeting and Popcorn and Politics, we are having an open house from 5PM to 7PM. We have refreshments and some finger food. Hope you can stop by and see our new, very comfortable space.
Thanks.
Nick
